Baracoa, Cuba

Baracoa, the oldest Spanish settlement in Cuba, is a hidden gem known for its stunning landscapes, rich history, and unique culture. Nestled between mountains and the sea, it offers visitors a mix of adventure, relaxation, and cultural experiences. Here are the top 10 places to visit in Baracoa:

1. Cathedral of Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion

The original cross "Cruz de la Parra", which Christopher Columbus built after his landing on the site of the current port, can be visited here.

A pristine beach perfect for relaxation and snorkeling. Soft white sand and crystal-clear waters. Quaint beach bars serve fresh seafood and tropical drinks.

It’s about 20 km from Baracoa, so arrange transportation or take a bike ride.

3. Malecon

Baracoa’s position on the coast, surrounding the Bahia de Miel (the bay of honey) drives many of the things to do here, and to orient yourself I recommend checking out the Malecon. The 1.5-kilometer (about one mile) long Malecon in Cuba is an esplanade or avenue that follows the coast around the city. There’s little to no shade available, and the best time to stroll along Baracoa’s Malecon is in the early evening.

5. La Farola

The pass road meanders through the tropical rainforest of the Sierra de Purial.
The two-lane road was one of the first major projects after the revolution. It connects Baracoa for the first time by land with the rest of Cuba.

6. Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral

The Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral stands proudly in the center of Baracoa. Its history is as rich as its architecture, having been established in the early 19th century. Inside, you will find remarkable wooden altars and stunning religious artwork that reflect the local culture and spirituality.

7. Humboldt National Park

Humboldt National Park is a must-visit for nature lovers exploring Baracoa. Nestled between the lush mountains and the pristine coastline, the park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you’ll find diverse ecosystems teeming with unique flora and fauna. Moreover, numerous hiking trails are winding through the park.

8. Finca Duaba

The Finca Duaba is another remarkable Baracoa landmark, celebrated for its cocoa production. Nestled in lush greenery, this cocoa farm offers a glimpse into the local agricultural practices and the significance of cacao in Baracoa’s economy. You can take a guided tour to learn about cocoa cultivation and processing methods.

9. Museo Fuerte Matachín

For delving into Baracoan history head to Museo Fuerte Matachín, housed inside an old and small fortress, the second of its kind to be built in Baracoa by Spanish Royal decree to further protect the city. The museum exhibits archaeological collections from the indigenous period in this part of Cuba as well as objects encompassing the colonial period, the French presence in the city, the independence wars, the Cuban Republic, and the Revolution.
